Error 49 is one of the most common HP laser printer errors. It appears as "49 Service Error" or "49.XXXX Error" and causes the printer to stop working entirely.
Error 49 is a firmware error caused by a bad print job, corrupted data sent to the printer, or a firmware conflict. It is not a hardware failure — in most cases it can be fixed without any parts or technician.
Hold the power button to turn off the printer completely. Unplug the power cable from the wall — not just from the printer. Wait a full 60 seconds. Plug back in and power on. This clears the printer memory and resolves the error in about 60% of cases.
On your computer, go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers → right-click your HP printer → See what is printing → Cancel all documents. A corrupted print job sitting in the queue will trigger error 49 every time the printer restarts.
Visit hp.com/support, search for your printer model, and download the latest firmware update. Outdated firmware is a common cause of error 49 on HP LaserJet printers.
If your printer is networked, a bad network packet can trigger error 49. Disconnect the network cable, restart the printer, and reconnect. If the error only occurs with network printing, the issue is upstream from the printer.
Try printing a test page directly from the printer control panel. If the test page prints successfully, the problem is a specific document or application. Try printing from a different application or converting the document to PDF first.
If error 49 persists after all steps above and a firmware update, the formatter board may need replacement. This is rare but does occur on older HP LaserJet printers with heavy use.
