Error 10.XX on HP LaserJet printers means the printer cannot communicate with the toner cartridge chip. This affects both OEM and compatible cartridges.
Every HP toner cartridge contains a small chip that stores information about toner levels, cartridge identity, and usage data. When this chip cannot be read, the printer displays error 10 and refuses to print.
Turn off the printer. Remove the toner cartridge completely. Wait 30 seconds. Reinstall it firmly, ensuring it clicks into place. Power on. This resolves the error in about 40% of cases.
On the cartridge, locate the gold or copper electrical contacts. Clean them gently with a dry lint-free cloth or cotton swab. Also clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Dirt or toner dust on these contacts causes read errors.
If you are using a compatible cartridge and getting error 10, the chip may not be programmed correctly for your specific printer model. Contact your supplier for a replacement chip or cartridge.
Inspect the cartridge chip for cracks or damage. A physically damaged chip cannot be read and the cartridge must be replaced.
Some HP models have a supply override option in the administration menu that allows printing with an unrecognized cartridge. Check your printer manual for this option.
